Expert Working Group on Marine Environmental Protection and Scientific Research in Southeast Asia

Tokyo, Japan — On June 27-28, WPS convened a multidisciplinary group of Filipino, Malaysian, Vietnamese, and Thai marine scientists at Tokyo International University (TIU) to jumpstart a collaborative study on biodiversity and coral reef ecology in the South China Sea, to promote data-driven policy recommendations.

Chaired by WPS Fellow for Marine Science, Dr. Abe Woo, the workshop was facilitated by Dr. Jeffrey Ordaniel, a TIU faculty member, with Commo. Jay Tarriela, an officer of the Philippine Coast Guard providing the maritime practitioner perspective.

The workshop marks the first step toward establishing a working group of marine scientists to advance international collaboration in marine research across Southeast Asia.

Stay tuned for more on this as we attempt to turn what is often seen as an impossible “confidence building measure” into reality!
